Yemeni officials reported that six individuals lost their lives on Tuesday due to an assault by Iran-backed Houthi insurgents on a vessel in the Bab el-Mandeb strait. Among the deceased were four crew members and two members of the National Resistance Forces allied with the government. The Yemeni Transportation Ministry confirmed that the Houthis launched three ballistic missiles at the commercial Yemeni vessel.
This incident marks the first confirmed fatalities resulting from Houthi assaults on maritime activities off Yemen during the recent escalation of hostilities in the region. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed off by Iran, attention has shifted to the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern tip of Yemen, serving as an alternative route for Saudi Arabia’s oil shipments.
The rebels targeted the government-controlled port city of Mokha on the Red Sea, as well as other areas within the country. Yemen’s military reported missile and drone strikes by the Houthis on Mokha and the central province of Marib, resulting in casualties, but specific details were not disclosed.
In recent attacks, the Houthis struck Marib and the eastern province of Hadramout, causing fatalities among government troops and civilians. Mokha, a key port under Yemen’s internationally recognized government, was also hit by missiles and drones, resulting in casualties, including military personnel.
The escalating Houthi assaults on government forces in Yemen and oil infrastructure in neighboring Saudi Arabia have raised concerns about reigniting the civil conflict in Yemen post the 2022 ceasefire, potentially creating a new front in the Middle East conflict.
Mohammed Abdul-Salam, the chief negotiator and spokesperson for the Houthis, accused Saudi Arabia of exploiting the ceasefire to intensify the air and sea blockade imposed since 2015. Despite expressing openness to negotiations, the Houthis emphasize that any resolution must involve lifting the blockade, a claim disputed by Riyadh.
