The UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House in June, hailed as a success by TKO officials, faced financial challenges. TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of UFC, disclosed spending approximately $60 million US on production costs for the event on June 14. However, during the company’s earnings call, chief financial officer Andrew Schleimer revealed a loss of around $30 million from the event, which was held to commemorate the United States’ 250th birthday and President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.
Schleimer explained to investors that despite incurring higher costs, some were offset by selling out global partnerships inventory. The event did not sell tickets, resulting in no live events revenue. The financial impact of the event led to an anticipated loss of approximately $30 million, affecting margins at UFC and on a consolidated basis.
The mixed martial arts spectacle attracted over 34 million viewers worldwide and featured a seven-fight card where every bout ended in knockout or technical knockout, a first in UFC history. Fourteen top fighters competed in the cage fight on the White House’s South Lawn before an audience of about 4,300 guests, including members of Congress, business leaders, military personnel, and Trump administration officials.
Although TKO suffered a financial setback, CEO Ari Emanuel praised the event during the earnings call, highlighting its success for the company, the UFC brand, and the sport of mixed martial arts. Other executives, like COO Mark Shapiro, lauded the event for generating over $1 billion in earned media value and strengthening commercial partnerships.
Despite the positive reviews, UFC president and CEO Dana White stated that the event is unlikely to return to the White House due to the significant costs involved. White expressed gratitude for the experience but mentioned that due to financial constraints, such an event would not be repeated in the future.
