A man was discovered deceased on a popular tourist island following severe weather conditions. In Santa Cruz, the main city of Tenerife, two tourists stumbled upon the body in a remote location. The incident occurred after Storm Therese, the most severe storm in the region in a decade, brought heavy rain and strong winds to the Spanish Canary Islands overnight. Tenerife was placed on red alert due to the dangerous weather conditions forecasted.
The tourists found the man while walking near Benijo in El Draguillo and immediately contacted emergency services. Local police confirmed the man’s death upon arrival at the scene. Firefighters from the Tenerife Emergency Consortium and National Police officers also responded to the incident. An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the man’s passing, and his identity has not been disclosed.
Storm Therese unleashed unusual and tumultuous weather on typically sunny Tenerife, causing torrential rainfall in densely populated areas for several days. The storm resulted in overflowing rivers and widespread flooding on the streets. Images from various parts of Gran Canaria depict the storm’s impact on mountainous terrain, including significant damage to a home’s facade.
Reports indicate that the storm affected the entire island, including mid-altitude regions such as San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Cuevas del Pinar, where substantial amounts of rainfall were recorded. The storm is estimated to have brought over 700 liters of rain to the island’s highest points.
Residents and tourists have been urged to stay cautious and vigilant in light of the severe weather conditions.
