A tragic incident occurred at a golf course where a worker lost his life after becoming trapped under a lawn mower.
The victim, identified as Jay Roush, aged 64, was discovered deceased when authorities were notified about a golf course staff member who was unresponsive and stuck beneath the mower in water. Emergency responders, including police and firefighters, rushed to the scene, but unfortunately, Mr. Roush was pronounced dead on-site.
The circumstances leading to Mr. Roush’s presence in the pond are still unclear. Following an inquiry, it was revealed that a colleague went looking for him after failed attempts to reach him via phone, eventually locating him with the mower submerged in approximately three feet of water.
The tragic incident took place at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Paris, Illinois, situated about three hours south of Chicago. This 18-hole golf course is renowned for its challenging terrain.
Authorities from the Edgar County Coroner’s Office confirmed the discovery of Mr. Roush at the golf course on Friday afternoon. An autopsy is scheduled in Springfield, Illinois, and both the coroner’s office and the Edgar County Sheriff’s Department are actively investigating the incident.
According to a public obituary, Mr. Roush, a resident of Vermillion, had a long career as an inspector at GE Aerospace in Indiana spanning over three decades. He was celebrated for his passion for golf and slow-pitch softball.
Furthermore, Mr. Roush was described as a dedicated coach and mentor to numerous young baseball, soccer, and basketball players in the area. He was known for his vibrant personality, active involvement in the community, and membership at the United Methodist Church in Vermillion.
Fond tributes poured in for Mr. Roush, with family members requesting attendees at his funeral to wear casual attire or Chicago Cubs shirts in his honor. Shelly Gower Andrews, a relative, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing the irreplaceable void left by Mr. Roush’s passing.
The community also reflected on Mr. Roush’s impact, acknowledging his embodiment of God’s love through his interactions with various groups, from sports teams to church congregants.
