Bosses of a Swiss bar where a fire claimed the lives of 40 individuals on New Year’s have shared details of a tragic incident involving a waitress they considered family. The owners, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, described the harrowing final moments of Cyane Panine, who perished in the blaze at Le Constellation in the ski resort of Crans-Montana.
The catastrophe unfolded as Ms. Panine, at the encouragement of Ms. Moretti, was enhancing the ambiance by engaging in festive activities with sparklers in champagne bottles. Unfortunately, the celebratory atmosphere turned disastrous when the pyrotechnics ignited soundproofing foam in the ceiling, leading to a deadly inferno that left 116 others severely injured.
Mr. Moretti, in a desperate attempt to rescue those trapped, forced open a locked basement door and discovered Ms. Panine among a group of unconscious individuals. The investigation revealed that the service door, usually unlocked, was mysteriously secured from the inside during the tragedy.
The couple, facing potential charges including manslaughter and negligence, recounted their efforts to revive Ms. Panine before her tragic passing. The Morettis expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing their close relationship with the victim and the devastating impact of the incident on their lives.
The lack of fire safety training for staff, coupled with the absence of essential safety equipment like sprinklers or fire extinguishers, has raised concerns over the bar’s operational practices. Despite previous safety inspections, the establishment lacked crucial safety measures, leading to fatal consequences on that fateful night.
As the investigation continues, questions have arisen regarding the presence of underage patrons at the bar and potential lapses in security protocols. The Morettis, originally from Corsica, deny any wrongdoing, despite facing serious allegations related to the tragic event.
The mourning community, including Ms. Panine’s family and friends, mourned her loss and expressed belief that with proper measures in place, her life and those of others could have been saved. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing as authorities seek to uncover the truth behind the devastating fire.
