Tragic Gas Exposure Claims Two Lives

Date:

Two individuals tragically lost their lives due to exposure to hazardous gas while performing a cleaning task. Daniel Hagle, aged 20, and his co-worker Michael Kammer Jr., aged 21, were attending a well servicing job on Tuesday when a chemical reaction occurred, leading to the release of deadly hydrogen sulfide gas that rendered Michael unconscious.

In a brave attempt to rescue his colleague, Daniel called for help before entering the well. However, both men succumbed to the toxic fumes and were pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to the hospital. Three other workers at the location were hospitalized for gas exposure but are expected to recover. Additionally, several first responders present at the scene underwent decontamination at a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure.

St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King stated, “This appears to be a substance they had used before, but due to the confined space, when the acid reacted with a mineral or chemical in the well, it emitted toxic gas.”

A fundraising campaign has been initiated to support the families of both men. Daniel’s fundraiser highlights his bravery and selflessness during the tragic event, emphasizing his willingness to assist others even at personal risk.

Michael’s GoFundMe page reflects on his unexpected demise, describing the impact of the environmental accident on the community and the financial challenges faced by his family for funeral arrangements.

Jenny Kammer, Michael’s mother, expressed her shock and grief at witnessing the recovery of her son’s body by emergency responders, stating that no mother should have to endure such a sight.

Duane Hagle and his wife Cherrie remembered their son Daniel as a hardworking individual who actively participated in community service and provided companionship to a Vietnam veteran. The official cause of death for Michael and Daniel is still under investigation by the medical examiner’s office.
