A tragic incident unfolded in Selangor, Malaysia, where a young boy passed away and his two siblings were hospitalized in critical condition allegedly after their mother administered a drug commonly used in heroin addiction treatment. The children, aged 11, 5, and 9, were quickly taken to Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin Hospital in Kajang after the mother reportedly gave them a liquid form of methadone, a medication used to help individuals combat drug dependencies.
According to reports, the parents, a 35-year-old woman, and her 44-year-old partner, were arrested following the administration of the drug to their sons, who were boys. Methadone is utilized as a substitute for heroin in addiction recovery programs. Authorities are now investigating the possible reasons behind the incident and the source of the drug.
A neighbor, who preferred to remain anonymous, mentioned that there were no unusual behaviors observed from the family before the tragic event. She recalled how the youngest child frequently played with her own child outside their residence. The neighbor emphasized that she was familiar with the family’s daily routines and never witnessed any disputes between the parents.
Selangor’s chief of police, Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar, confirmed the arrests of the children’s parents, underlining the risks associated with methadone ingestion for children. Methadone, commonly used in treating heroin withdrawal symptoms, can also be prescribed for end-of-life care and severe pain management.
The NHS warns about the dangers of methadone ingestion by children, as even a small amount of the substance could result in severe harm or fatal consequences. Immediate medical attention is crucial if a child accidentally ingests methadone, as it poses a significant risk to their well-being and safety.
