A five-year-old boy with autism tragically lost his life after going missing in Brazil when he told his mother he was heading to the toilet. João Gabriel Ferreira dos Santos disappeared from his rural home, prompting a frantic search involving hundreds of volunteers, drones, dogs, and a helicopter.
The search spanned three square kilometers of dense terrain, including woodland, ponds, and farmland. João, a non-verbal child requiring level-two support for autism, resided with his parents on a farm where they served as caretakers.
Sadly, João’s lifeless body was discovered three days later in a two-meter-deep water pool formed on a torn cover of a bio-digester near the family residence. Firefighters located him after draining the pool, which was contaminated due to a tear in the cover, allowing water to accumulate.
