Five tourists tragically lost their lives during a cave diving expedition in the Maldives, just moments away from the surface. Among the victims were identified as Italian nationals – Monica Montefalcone, 52, a marine biologist from the University of Genoa, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, 20, researcher Muriel Oddenino, 31, recent graduate Federico Gualtieri, 31, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti.
According to reports, the group disappeared approximately 15 minutes away from resurfacing and were later discovered lifeless without the necessary diving gear. Maldivian rescue diver Staff Sgt Mohamed Mahdhee also tragically lost his life while attempting to locate the bodies.
Presidential spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Sharee mentioned that the cave’s depth is so extreme that even with top-notch equipment, divers avoid attempting to reach it due to its risks.
The incident, which occurred on May 14, was attributed to a “tragic human error,” causing the group to perish 200 feet below the water’s surface, as explained by Finnish diver Sami Paakkarinen. He highlighted the absence of proper cave-diving equipment like a diving reel or guided rope among the group.
Gualtieri’s body was recovered on the day of the incident and repatriated to Italy, while the other victims’ remains were retrieved later. Experts speculate that the deaths could be linked to oxygen toxicity and panic situations.
Pulmonologist Claudio Micheletto suggested that a malfunction in the tanks could have led to oxygen toxicity, resulting in a distressing end for the divers. He highlighted the dangers of breathing high concentrations of oxygen underwater, leading to symptoms like dizziness, pain, altered consciousness, and disorientation, hindering the ability to resurface.
Alfonso Bolognini, president of the Italian Society of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine, emphasized the risks within caves at significant depths, where any problem or panic could lead to fatal consequences due to impaired visibility and potential errors.
The exact events at the underwater cave remain uncertain, as investigations and expert opinions continue to shed light on the tragedy.
