Date:

A tragic incident unfolded as a young man lost his life in a river, sparking a heartfelt plea from his grieving family. The 18-year-old, Leon Pafu Ngoy, tragically drowned in the River Irwell at Clifton Country Park, Salford, despite emergency services’ efforts on June 27.

Following a distress call, a comprehensive search operation ensued, lasting until the following Monday when his body was eventually recovered. Leon, who had just completed his GCSE exams, was described as enthusiastic about his future by his loved ones.

Expressing their sorrow, Leon’s family emphasized a crucial message about water safety, urging people to avoid risky waters regardless of appearances. They mourned the loss of Leon, highlighting his infectious smile, big aspirations, and positive impact on those around him.

The family shared their devastation over the accident, stressing that no one should be blamed for the tragedy. They recounted Leon’s vibrant personality, interests in basketball, fashion, and music, and the support they received during this trying time.

In an effort to prevent similar tragedies, the family hoped that sharing Leon’s story would raise awareness about water safety. The Mirror has initiated the Save Lives For Sam water safety campaign, aiming to address the rising drowning incidents in the UK through various measures, including mandatory water safety education, public awareness campaigns, improved safety equipment, and advocacy for dedicated water safety initiatives.
