An 11-year-old girl tragically lost her life in the River Thames after requesting permission from her father to “dip her toes” in the water, according to details presented during an inquest.
The incident occurred on March 31, 2025, at Barge House Causeway in east London, leading to an extensive search operation before the discovery of the girl’s body.
During a hearing at the East London Coroner’s Court attended by family members, the official cause of death was ruled as accidental by Coroner Graeme Irvine. He determined that the girl died from immersion in the river, stating it was a case of accidental death.
The inquest revealed that the girl had been at a birthday party the day before her passing, where she requested to stay over at a friend’s place. Her father initially had reservations but eventually agreed after consulting with the friend’s parent to not spoil her fun.
The court learned that the next morning, the children prepared breakfast on their own before heading to a nearby park and eventually ending up at Barge House Causeway near the river.
The father recounted how the girl approached him while near the river and expressed her desire to dip her toes in the water. Despite warning her about the location not being suitable, the girl insisted she knew about the currents, leading to a tense exchange between them.
A witness, Nathan Guy, residing nearby, observed the events unfold and promptly called emergency services upon realizing the gravity of the situation. He recounted seeing the children playing near the jetty, with one losing a shoe in the river, prompting the tragic sequence of events.
The coroner emphasized that there was no evidence of ill intent among the children, describing the incident as a tragic accident and commending the girl’s attempt to help her friend retrieve the lost shoe.
Following an extensive search effort involving various authorities, the girl’s body was recovered from the Thames in mid-April 2025. The coroner’s pathologist confirmed that the girl was in good health and found no signs of assault, attributing her cause of death to drowning with no suspicious circumstances identified.
In his concluding remarks, the coroner addressed the family’s concerns and clarified that his role was not to assign blame but to determine the facts surrounding the tragedy. He acknowledged the difficulties of parental supervision in such situations and extended heartfelt condolences to the girl’s family and friends, recognizing the profound impact of the unexpected loss.
