Two 12-year-olds tragically lost their lives in a devastating school shooting incident that shocked the community. Kylie May Smith and Abel Mwansa Jr were among the eight individuals killed by 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, who was later found deceased in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada following the rampage.
Described as one of the deadliest shootings in the country’s history, Van Rootselaar carried out the attack, resulting in six fatalities at the school and two at the family home, identified as the attacker’s mother and stepbrother.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald disclosed that the deceased at the school included a 39-year-old female teacher, three 12-year-old female students, and two male students aged 12 and 13.
According to Mr. McDonald, law enforcement encountered gunfire upon arrival at the school. They swiftly located the shooter, who was confirmed deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound within minutes.
Tyler Curry, who had a connection with Abel through the Tumbler Ridge Soccer Association, expressed the community’s struggle to comprehend the tragic news. He praised Abel’s dedication and impact on the soccer team, emphasizing the profound effect of the massacre on the town.
Kylie, also 12, was another victim of the senseless violence. A fundraiser initiated by her relative aims to support Kylie’s family during this difficult time, providing assistance with travel expenses and creating a memorial to honor her memory.
Shanon Dycke, Kylie’s aunt and organizer of the GoFundMe page, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Kylie and extended sympathy to the other affected families. She emphasized the devastating impact of the tragedy on the community and offered prayers to those with children still recovering in hospitals.
Mr. McDonald revealed that prior police visits to the shooter’s residence were related to mental health concerns. The killings at the family home preceded the school incident, with a young family member alerting a neighbor who contacted the authorities. The bodies of the suspect’s mother and 11-year-old stepbrother were discovered at the residence.
At the school, victims were found in various locations, with Mr. McDonald indicating one victim in a stairwell and the others in the library. He clarified that the suspect had no known connection to the school victims and reiterated that there was no evidence of specific targeting in the tragic event.
