On a scorching April morning, a routine school drop-off turned tragic for Miguel Antunes Versari, a toddler about to turn three. Suffering from flu-like symptoms and a toothache, he was given ibuprofen to alleviate his discomfort. Uncharacteristically quiet, he drifted off to sleep in the car on the way to the nursery.
Expected to be dropped off at 7 am in Videira, Brazil, Miguel was inadvertently left inside the vehicle when his stepmother, after dropping off his nurse mother at work, forgot to take him to nursery. Tragically, his lifeless body was discovered by his mother’s partner when she went to collect him from the nursery.
The blonde-haired, blue-eyed toddler perished alone in the intense heat, trapped in the car for over 10 hours. Despite feeling unwell the day before, the nursery did not raise any concerns about his absence. The sweltering outside temperature in Videira rose to around 31C, creating dangerous conditions inside the car, where temperatures could exceed 57C, akin to an oven.
An autopsy confirmed that Miguel succumbed to heatstroke and asphyxiation due to extreme heat. No signs of physical harm were found on his body. Security camera footage from a nearby location assisted in reconstructing the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.
Police Chief Édipo Helt detailed the timeline of events, indicating that the child was moving inside the car until 7:14 am but ceased movement around 9:05 am, succumbing to asphyxiation. Despite attempts at resuscitation, little Miguel could not be saved. The investigation revealed displaced objects in the car, suggesting a struggle before he lost consciousness.
A suspicious death inquiry was launched, and Miguel’s stepmother, who had been in a relationship with the boy’s mother for four years, was interrogated. She faces charges of involuntary manslaughter due to negligence, pending trial.
