A tragic incident unfolded in Barcelona today as a commuter train collided, resulting in the death of the train driver and injuries to numerous passengers. This unfortunate event occurred just two days after a separate train crash in southern Spain claimed the lives of 42 individuals and left many others wounded.
Reports indicate that the latest derailment in Barcelona was caused by a retaining wall collapsing onto the tracks. Local sources have disclosed that around 20 individuals sustained injuries as a consequence of the crash.
As the country commenced a three-day period of mourning for the victims of the catastrophic train collision on Sunday, the details emerged of a northbound and southbound train, collectively carrying close to 500 passengers, colliding near Adamuz in Spain’s Córdoba province, resulting in significant loss of life and devastation.
In response to the Barcelona crash, fifteen ambulances and 35 fire crews were swiftly dispatched to the scene, as reported by the Spanish news agency EFE. Firefighters worked diligently to rescue individuals trapped inside the train carriages.
The incident in Barcelona occurred on a commuter train traveling between the towns of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and Gelida, located approximately 40 kilometers from Barcelona amidst heavy rainfall in the area.
The tragic events on Sunday unfolded at 7:45 p.m. when the rear portion of a train carrying 289 passengers on the Malaga to Madrid route derailed and collided with an oncoming train traveling from Madrid to Huelva, according to rail operator Adif.
Among the victims of the collision were the parents of a young girl who were returning from Madrid after attending a performance of “The Lion King” on Sunday evening.
Fidel Saez, who lost his mother in the crash, shared how his brother, along with his two children and a nephew, managed to survive the ordeal. Recounting the harrowing experience, Saez described the miraculous survival and the poignant last moments of his mother.
The impact of the collision was most severe on the Madrid to Huelva train, causing its first two carriages to derail and plunge down a slope, with bodies being thrown considerable distances from the crash site, as stated by Andalusia regional President Juanma Moren.
