A train fire at a New York rail yard has led to the temporary suspension of services from Penn Station, the busiest train station in the western hemisphere. The incident involved an Amtrak work train at the West Side rail yard in Manhattan, where five individuals, suspected to be railway employees, sustained injuries and were treated for smoke inhalation. According to ABC7, two of the injured are in critical condition.
As a result of the fire, NJ Transit, Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), and Amtrak services have been halted, causing significant delays. Emergency responders are currently present at the scene on 10th Avenue and 31st Street, where dense black smoke engulfed the area around 1.30am EDT (6.30am BST).
Glenn Schuck, a reporter for WINS radio’s Morning Drive, mentioned, “We’re hearing of two serious injuries.”
Additionally, fire crews are actively addressing a track fire in one of the Hudson River Tunnels at 10th Avenue and 31st Street.
