“Travel Experts Advocate Savings Over Star Ratings for Hotel Bookings”

Date:

When selecting accommodations, many of us prioritize certain factors such as location, amenities, and ratings.

Nevertheless, insiders in the travel industry warn that focusing too much on star ratings may lead to overspending and missing out on excellent hotel options.

Recent findings from TravelSupermarket indicate that opting for a 2-star hotel instead of a 4-star one could result in an average saving of about £285 per person for a 7-night vacation. According to Holiday Expert Chelsea Dickenson, this switch does not necessarily mean sacrificing quality.

Chelsea commented, “Many people assume that dropping star ratings equates to compromising greatly on quality. However, the data clearly demonstrates the significant savings achievable by being more open-minded about hotel ratings.”

She added, “Star ratings often emphasize facilities rather than aspects that travelers truly value, such as cleanliness, comfort, style, and service. While a lower-starred hotel might lack certain amenities like a large pool or room service, it can still offer a pleasant stay in a prime location.”

The study by TravelSupermarket further revealed that minor downgrades in star ratings can lead to significant savings. For instance, moving from a 4-star to a 3-star hotel could save approximately £200 per person, and transitioning from a 3-star to a 2-star could save around £75 per person.

Chelsea highlighted, “It’s intriguing to note that many travelers automatically exclude 2 and 3 star hotels when planning trips, unaware that they could potentially save substantial amounts by reviewing feedback and images first. For numerous travelers, especially those booking city breaks or boutique stays, the extra amenities often go unused.”

To test the theory, Chelsea booked a 2-star hotel, Boho Suites in Mykonos, for a holiday with her partner James, who appreciates luxury. Despite the lower rating, the hotel had positive reviews and impressive photos, prompting Chelsea to book without disclosing the star rating to her partner.

Upon arrival, James was pleasantly surprised. Chelsea recounted, “Initially, he was impressed and even thought I had booked us into a high-end establishment. He noted the spacious layout, large bed, ample wardrobes, deluxe shower, stocked minibar, and a terrace with sea views. But what truly amazed him was the outdoor jacuzzi.”

She added, “After taking it all in, I asked him to guess the star rating, and without hesitation, he confidently stated it had to be a 4-star hotel. And I understood why. The hotel was roomy, stylish, and had a wow factor that belied its 2-star status.”

For those considering a budget-friendly Greek escape, browsing Skyscanner for low-cost flights to Mykonos, starting at £48 each way, could be a wise move.
