“Traveler from Uganda in Austria Monitored for Ebola Symptoms”

Date:

A recent traveler from Uganda to Austria has been admitted to the hospital after displaying symptoms resembling those of the Ebola virus. Despite an initial test yielding negative results, the individual is being closely monitored, and local authorities have issued a health alert pending further examinations.

The patient is currently receiving care and observation at a hospital in the Urfahr-Umgebung district of Austria. According to a statement from the Provincial Health Directorate, the individual sought medical attention upon returning from Uganda, a country grappling with an Ebola outbreak. Following protocols, the patient was isolated and treated accordingly.

Although the initial blood test did not show signs of Ebola infection, a second sample is required to confirm the findings, as reported by the Austrian publication Kronen Zeitung. Meanwhile, the individual will remain isolated in the hospital under continuous observation as per health guidelines.

Authorities are actively conducting contact tracing to identify individuals who may have had contact with the patient. Plans are underway to transfer the patient to a specialized medical facility in Vienna for quarantine.

The Ebola outbreak in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo was officially declared on May 15, 2026, with over 900 suspected cases and at least 223 deaths reported. Additionally, Uganda has reported seven cases of the disease.

The situation in Austria unfolds amidst heightened measures in Europe, with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) collaborating with the aviation sector to enhance passenger safety. ECDC is also working closely with partners to support DRC and Uganda, emphasizing the importance of exit screening for symptomatic travelers. This collaboration aims to update risk assessments and recommendations for the European Union and European Economic Area promptly.
