Trump initiated a $10 billion lawsuit against the British broadcaster over the editing of a 2024 Panorama documentary that focused on the 2021 US Capitol riots. Allegedly, the footage of his speech on January 6 was manipulated before his supporters breached the Capitol building.
His attorneys accused BBC representatives of embarking on a “fishing expedition” by requesting financial information related to a trust holding Trump’s business assets. The BBC’s legal team argued that the details from the Donald J Trump Revocable Trust, managed by his son Donald Trump Jr., were necessary to evaluate the documentary’s financial impact.
Court documents revealed that Trump’s lawyers contested the demand for financial information, labeling it as premature and burdensome. Both parties are now awaiting a court ruling on the matter, with Trump’s team pushing for a new judge while the BBC opposes this request.
Trump claims that the Panorama episode tarnished his reputation and caused financial harm, particularly as it aired shortly before his successful 2024 presidential campaign. However, the BBC countered by stating that the episode was not accessible in the US, where the lawsuit was filed, neither on cable TV nor streaming platforms, challenging the Florida court’s jurisdiction.
Despite the controversy, the BBC issued a formal apology and saw the resignation of former director general Tim Davie. The broadcaster aims to dismiss the case, warning of the potential negative impact it could have on robust reporting about public figures and events.
