While South Korea’s Defence Ministry confirmed that the exercises commenced as planned on Monday, the country’s presidential Blue House is reviewing Trump’s decision. The Blue House expressed hope that the amicable relationship between the U.S. and North Korean leaders will foster meaningful dialogue between the two nations, advancing peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. It reiterated the commitment to coordinating on joint defense posture and military exercises.
In response to Trump’s assertion that South Korea declined to support U.S. efforts in denuclearizing Iran, Seoul stated that it is deliberating potential military contributions while considering its defense readiness on the Korean Peninsula and domestic legal procedures. Trump’s stance on this matter has drawn criticism, with Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly denouncing the reduction of joint exercises as short-sighted and a mistake. The joint training, involving 18,000 South Korean soldiers over 11 days, aims to enhance readiness against North Korean threats.
North Korea has been intensifying its nuclear and missile capabilities following the breakdown of high-stakes diplomacy with Trump in 2019. The regime recently threatened stern actions against the U.S. and South Korea, characterizing their military drills as provocations leading to regional instability. These maneuvers by North Korea are typically seen as a prelude to increased weapons testing activities.
