Donald Trump dedicated much of the past week preparing to challenge or discredit the outcome of the upcoming midterm elections in November. Despite his focus on this, he still found time to tune in to a football game.
During his televised address on Thursday evening, overshadowed in the UK by other political events, Trump engaged in a ceremony before the World Cup Final, where he and FIFA chief Gianni Infantino exchanged accolades. Trump also mentioned playing golf with Harry Kane and offered his opinions on sports strategy.
In his address, Trump alleged evidence of election interference in the 2020 election by China, despite no credible intelligence supporting this claim. Many are concerned that Trump may use these unsubstantiated claims as a basis to challenge the upcoming midterm election results.
The Trump administration, led by Markwayne Mullin, the new Homeland Security Secretary, threatened state election officials with repercussions if they did not comply with Trump’s attempts to influence the midterm elections. Trump also claimed without evidence that there are over 250,000 non-citizens registered to vote in certain states and aims to purge voter rolls of these alleged non-citizens.
Despite limited instances of non-citizen voting, Trump’s administration is pushing to obtain and manipulate voter data to support its agenda. Former officials have criticized Trump’s approach, citing concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
Trump’s speech also advocated for the SAVE America Act, which includes measures to alter voting regulations in favor of the Republican Party. However, the likelihood of this act passing through Congress is low due to insufficient support.
In summary, Trump’s recent actions and statements have raised doubts about the integrity of the upcoming elections and sparked controversy regarding his attempts to influence the electoral process.
