Donald Trump is proposing a $152 million investment from US taxpayers to convert the historically significant Alcatraz into a maximum-security prison once again. The iconic island jail, which ceased housing prisoners in the early 1960s and now draws over 1.2 million visitors annually, would undergo a transformation with an allocated budget of £115 million aimed at revamping it into a cutting-edge detention facility. This proposal is part of a larger $1.7 billion funding request for the Federal Bureau of Prisons outlined in the latest US budget plans.
The envisioned plans for Alcatraz involve repurposing the site to accommodate the most dangerous and violent offenders in the country, although specific details on the project remain scarce. When the prison shut down in 1962, estimates indicated that annual maintenance costs, excluding daily operations, could range from $3 million to $5 million. The island, known as “The Rock,” is largely covered in bird waste, requiring all resources for reconstruction and operation to be transported by boat.
The US Federal Bureau of Prisons expressed its commitment to evaluating and implementing the necessary steps to reopen and manage USP Alcatraz. Trump’s proposal to restore Alcatraz to its former role was met with criticism by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who denounced the idea as wasteful and vowed to oppose it. She labeled the budget request from the Trump administration as unreasonable and insisted on its outright rejection.
Trump’s vision for the 116-year-old Alcatraz building involves significant expansion to create a secure prison facility. He emphasized the perceived security of the surrounding waters, likening them to being “surrounded by sharks,” although experts have clarified that the shark species present, such as small leopard sharks, pose minimal threat and would not impede potential escape attempts.
Critics have pointed out logistical challenges, such as the absence of a water and sewage system on the island, necessitating all prison supplies to be brought in by boat. By the time Alcatraz ceased operations, it was three times more costly to operate compared to other federal prisons, as reported by the US Bureau of Prisons.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie dismissed the notion of reopening Alcatraz as a federal prison, deeming it an unrealistic proposal and reiterating his stance in recent statements. Approval by Congress is required for the plan to proceed, with anticipated debates and disagreements across party lines regarding the specifics and scale of the broader $1.7 billion prison budget.
