Donald Trump seemingly disclosed a private text message he received from French President Emmanuel Macron just before threatening to impose 200% tariffs on French wine and Champagne.
Trump indicated that these tariffs would pressure Macron to participate in his proposed “Board of Peace.” In response to a reporter’s inquiry about Macron’s refusal to join the board, Trump stated that Macron would soon be out of office and that imposing hefty tariffs on French wines and Champagnes would prompt his compliance, although it was not mandatory.
A source close to Macron revealed on Monday that France plans to reject the invitation to join the initiative proposed by the United States. Trump later revealed on Truth Social that Macron had messaged him about Greenland before the tariff threats against France were made.
A screenshot displayed Macron informing Trump that they shared common ground on issues concerning Iran and Syria but expressing confusion over Trump’s actions regarding Greenland.
Alleged text messages also show Macron proposing a meeting with Trump and other G7 leaders post-World Economic Forum in Davos, followed by a dinner invitation in Paris on Thursday.
The concept of the ‘Board of Peace’ was initially introduced in September to oversee the reconstruction of war-torn Gaza. However, Trump expanded its scope to address global conflict resolution in an invitation extended to world leaders last week.
A preliminary document circulated to approximately 60 nations outlines a requirement for members to contribute $1 billion in cash for their membership to extend beyond three years.
Countries like Australia, Brazil, Cyprus, Egypt, Italy, Jordan, New Zealand, Pakistan, Turkey, and Vietnam are among those invited to join the board. Trump also disclosed extending an invitation to Putin, who is reportedly contemplating acceptance.
