Donald Trump has reversed his stance on the UK’s Chagos Islands agreement following a conversation with Keir Starmer. The US President had previously criticized the transfer of the Islands as foolish. However, after a discussion with the UK Prime Minister, Trump indicated his approval for the agreement to proceed.
In a message on Truth Social, Trump stated that after productive talks with Starmer, he recognized the deal as the best possible outcome. He also emphasized his right to reinforce the American presence in Diego Garcia in case of any threats to US operations at the base.
A Downing Street spokesperson confirmed that both leaders acknowledged the significance of the deal in safeguarding the joint UK-US base on Diego Garcia for shared security interests. The agreement involves the UK relinquishing sovereignty of the British Indian Ocean Territory to Mauritius while leasing back the facility on the island.
The leaders also touched on the ongoing peace negotiations in Ukraine, expressing concerns over the attacks on civilians by Putin. The importance of securing the joint UK-US base on Diego Garcia was reiterated during their conversation.
Amidst the progress towards finalizing the agreement in Parliament, discussions between the two leaders have aimed to ensure the continued operation of the base.
