Trump Slams UK Over Chagos Islands, Threatens Greenland Acquisition

Date:

Donald Trump has directed criticism towards the UK as he escalates his threats to acquire Greenland.

In a recent post on Truth Social at 6:38 am UK time today, the US President condemned the UK’s decision to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius as an “act of GREAT STUPIDITY.” He argued that this move is another justification for the US to assert control over Greenland.

Sir Keir Starmer is scheduled to engage in discussions with ministers during his weekly Cabinet meeting today, following his call for peace in response to Trump’s trade war threats over Greenland. Trump reaffirmed on Monday his commitment to imposing tariffs on the UK and European allies for opposing his Greenland acquisition plan. The European Union is preparing for an emergency summit in Brussels on Thursday to address Trump’s latest ultimatum.

In his social media post, the US President expressed his dismay, stating, “Shockingly, our ‘brilliant’ NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER.” Trump emphasized the importance of projecting strength to international powers like China and Russia. He highlighted that the UK’s actions jeopardize national security, reinforcing his stance on the necessity of acquiring Greenland.

The Chagos Islands have been under British sovereignty since 1814, with the establishment of the British Indian Ocean Territory in 1965. Last year, the UK agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius while retaining control of the UK-US military base on Diego Garcia. The Trump administration previously supported this arrangement, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio praising it as a significant achievement.

Trump’s social media outburst followed reaffirmations of support for Greenland’s sovereignty from European allies. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized that the future of Greenland should be determined solely by the Greenlanders and the Danes. Denmark, which deployed troops to Greenland recently, warned that any US attempt to seize the territory would have grave implications for NATO.

In a previous post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned a productive call with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and proposed a meeting in Davos, Switzerland, at the World Economic Forum involving various parties. He underscored the critical importance of Greenland for national and global security, asserting that there is no turning back on this issue.

Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on the UK and other NATO members until a deal is reached to purchase Greenland has raised tensions. He reiterated his intention to proceed with tariffs and declined to comment on the possibility of using force to acquire Greenland. Trump urged Europe to focus on other pressing matters, like the conflict with Russia and Ukraine, rather than Greenland.

Starmer’s spokesperson revealed that the Prime Minister had cautioned Trump against imposing tariffs on allies striving for collective security within NATO. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed concerns about the tariffs, emphasizing the need to avoid escalation and resolve the issue cooperatively. Merz expressed willingness to meet with Trump during his visit to Davos.
