An individual who secured nearly £900,000 from a scratchcard is now entangled in a legal dispute with a coworker over the prize money. This scenario sheds light on the potential complexities of workplace friendships as a Spanish man took legal action against his colleague for not sharing a portion of his lottery win, even though it was a relatively small percentage.
The lottery winner had allegedly promised to split the winnings with his coworker, leading to the legal battle when he reneged on the agreement. Surprisingly, the court in the municipality of Tui in Galicia, Spain, ruled in favor of the coworker, despite the absence of a written contract, based on evidence supporting the verbal agreement.
In July 2022, the coworkers participated in the ‘Mega Millionario’ scratchcard game, which had been a routine for them over the years. When one of them hit the €1 million (£869,000) jackpot, it was agreed that the other would receive 10 percent of the prize, totaling €100,000 (£87,000) in this instance.
After celebrating their luck at their workplace restaurant and elsewhere, the winner backed out of the arrangement following objections from his daughter. When the matter reached the courts, the winner denied the existence of any agreement due to the lack of written proof, but the judge ruled against him, highlighting the validity of verbal contracts under Spanish law.
The court found various testimonies and a recorded phone call confirming the agreement, compelling the winner to pay the promised €100,000 along with interest. This case follows a group of friends who won a €123 million (£100m) EuroMillions jackpot, with one member expressing a preference for good health over the significant monetary gain.
Fernand, from Zingem in Belgium, emphasized the importance of health over wealth, stating that good health is invaluable despite financial success. He expressed a desire to ensure the happiness of his children and grandchildren with the newfound wealth.
