US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Iran amidst ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The tension escalated as Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least 47 individuals on June 19, with additional casualties reported on June 20, including two children. In a retaliatory move, Hezbollah launched a drone attack that claimed the lives of four Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon.
Iran responded by once again closing the vital Strait of Hormuz, citing violations of the ceasefire by the US and Israel. The country cautioned that if hostilities persist, further actions are planned. President Trump, in a statement on Truth Social, demanded Iran to rein in Hezbollah, emphasizing that any disruptions caused by the group would be met with severe repercussions.
Following an interim peace agreement between the US and Iran, vessel traffic resumed through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil and natural gas shipments. Discussions on Tehran’s nuclear program and the ceasefire deal continued as US Vice-President JD Vance and Iranian officials met in Switzerland. Vance expressed optimism about the potential for improved relations in the Middle East but acknowledged challenges in reaching a lasting resolution.
Although Israel and Hezbollah are not part of the ceasefire agreement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to maintain a presence in southern Lebanon until perceived threats are neutralized. Hezbollah, while affirming its commitment to the ceasefire, accused Israel of multiple violations and vowed to defend against Israeli incursions. The conflict saw Hezbollah launching projectiles at Israeli forces, prompting Israeli military responses targeting Hezbollah positions and militants.
As tensions persist, the region remains on edge, with efforts ongoing to navigate towards a lasting peace agreement.
