William F. Baker, an 84-year-old broadcaster, and his wife have decided to sell Henry Island, a nearly 90-hectare property they have owned for 35 years. Situated just a 20-minute boat ride from Port Hood, N.S., the island boasts a four-bedroom house and a well-maintained lighthouse dating back to 1901.
Originally purchasing the island in 1991, the Bakers utilized it as a retreat from their hectic lives in New York City. Baker, known for his roles at PBS and Westinghouse Television, expressed his passion for lighthouses and desire to own an island, leading them to discover Henry Island.
Captivated by the island’s serene beauty, surrounded by beaches and cliffs, the couple found solace in the peaceful environment. Over the years, they undertook renovations on the lighthouse and home with the help of local residents, making the property self-sufficient with rainwater collection, solar power, and other sustainable practices.
Despite the emotional attachment to the island, the Bakers are finding it challenging to maintain the property due to their advancing age. Listed for nearly $7 million Cdn over the past two years, there has been interest from potential buyers in various regions. The couple hopes to find a new owner who will preserve the island’s natural charm and history.
The property continues to be marketed online and in publications dedicated to lighthouse preservation, aiming to attract buyers who appreciate the unique allure of owning such a remote and pristine location.
