U.S.A.!” during the Canadian leader’s address to the EU in France. Despite some audience groans, Carney humorously acknowledged the interruption and continued advocating for strengthened Canada-EU relations and a collaborative “alliance for the future.”
In a statement to CBC News, Droese explained that his chant aimed to highlight the significant geopolitical dynamics at play. He praised Carney’s lighthearted response, noting the prime minister’s evident sense of humor.
Carney’s speech in Strasbourg signifies a strategic move to enhance ties with the EU and aligns with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s recent proposal for Canada to become the EU’s inaugural “associate member,” a novel concept with undefined parameters.
Regarding von der Leyen’s proposition, Droese criticized it as impulsive and unfeasible, emphasizing that such a status lacks legal basis within existing European treaties. Droese, affiliated with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has been gaining popularity in German political circles.
The AfD advocates for stringent domestic policies, including mass deportations of non-German individuals and the promotion of a nationalist cultural agenda that restricts funding for projects deemed contrary to national interests, such as certain Holocaust memorial initiatives.
In his statement, Droese accused von der Leyen of corruption and implied that she is pursuing an arrangement with Canada to circumvent strained relations with the United States.
