The UK’s regulatory body for medicines has approved the first GLP-1 weight loss pill in the country. The newly authorized Wegovy (semaglutide) tablet is designed for obese adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, as well as overweight individuals with conditions like high blood pressure. These tablets are intended to be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
The dosage for the Wegovy tablet starts at 1.5mg and can be increased to 4mg, 9mg, and eventually 25mg. Patients are required to stay on each dosage level for at least a month before progressing to the next level. Individuals currently receiving private treatment with a 2.4mg Wegovy injection weekly can transition directly to taking 25mg tablets once daily, as confirmed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
The medication, manufactured by Novo Nordisk, is prescription-based and will soon be available for private purchase. However, it has not yet been assessed for use within the NHS healthcare system. Approval from the MHRA was granted based on a trial where adults taking 25mg of the drug daily, in combination with diet and exercise, experienced significant weight loss compared to those on a placebo.
The Wegovy tablet functions by imitating the effects of GLP-1, a hormone released post-meal consumption.
