Britain has experienced four heatwaves this year, and a fifth one appears imminent in the coming days. Temperatures soared to 35C recently in parts of southern and eastern England, meeting the heatwave criteria. Although there might be a slight decrease in temperature over the weekend, another peak of 35C is anticipated soon.
According to the GFS weather model, temperatures are predicted to rise on August 11, with highs of 31C likely across various regions in England and parts of Wales. The data suggests a potential maximum temperature of 35C on August 12, with the Midlands and south-east expected to be the hottest areas, while temperatures of 33C could be felt as far north as Yorkshire.
On August 13, East Anglia could experience highs of 34C, with central, southern, and eastern England, along with South Wales, likely to reach 31-33C. If this forecast materializes, it would mark the fifth official heatwave of the year.
An official heatwave is declared when temperatures surpass the ‘heatwave threshold’ for three consecutive days, which is set at 28C in the south-east and decreases to 25C moving away from that region. Temperature anomaly maps indicate that the UK is expected to experience temperatures significantly above the seasonal average from August 11 to August 13.
The GFS model suggests that 11 counties in England could witness temperatures exceeding 35C later in the month. The Met Office forecasts that temperatures could turn very warm or hot in August, although there is a possibility of thundery weather in some areas.
The Met Office’s outlook for August 5 to August 14 suggests a period of changing weather conditions with intervals of rain or showers and sunshine. The forecast mentions the likelihood of thundery spells and states that temperatures are expected to be slightly above average, with the potential for warm and humid periods, particularly in the south, though not as extreme as recent weeks.
