Advanced weather forecasts indicate that temperatures are likely to rise above 30C in the UK, potentially marking the fourth heatwave of the year. Amidst the ongoing third heatwave of 2026, southern regions are anticipated to experience temperatures exceeding 30C until the upcoming weekend.
Meteorologists from the Met Office project a decline in temperatures over the weekend, with southern areas reaching highs of 26C and northern areas peaking at 24C on Sunday. This shift could signal the conclusion of the current heatwave.
Despite the temporary cooldown, weather models suggest a swift return to 30C temperatures. The GFS model predicts highs of 30C and 31C in eastern, western, and southern England by next Thursday, with a potential increase to 32C in southern and south-eastern regions on Friday.
The following Saturday is expected to bring even warmer conditions, with potential highs of 35C in southern and south-eastern England, and temperatures reaching 33C to 34C across central areas. Northern regions like Yorkshire may hit 32C, while Wales could see temperatures as high as 30C.
Projection maps for the following Saturday highlight extensive areas in England and Wales in deep red, indicating temperatures significantly above the seasonal average. Conversely, parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland are shaded in blue, suggesting below-average temperatures.
According to GFS model maps, around 17 counties in England could experience temperatures exceeding 34C next week. David Hayter, the Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, noted the prolonged heatwave and the likelihood of some areas continuing to experience hot conditions before a cooler period sets in next week. The Met Office also warns of a potential return to very warm weather in southern regions post-weekend, with a risk of thunderstorms towards the week’s end.
