A heatwave is expected to sweep across the UK this week, with the Met Office forecasting temperatures reaching as high as 35C on Wednesday. Around 20 counties could experience temperatures exceeding 30C, particularly in the south-east of England.
Tuesday will mark the beginning of the heatwave, with the mercury set to rise to between 29C and 30C in southern England before peaking on Wednesday. The Met Office’s forecast map indicates scorching highs of 34C in Cambridge, Norfolk, and Suffolk, as well as 33C in London and parts of the Home Counties.
This surge in temperatures is projected to trigger the fourth heatwave of the year in the UK, surpassing the local thresholds. Health warnings have been issued by the UK Health Security Agency for various regions, including the South East, London, East Midlands, and East of England, due to the anticipated impacts on health and social care services.
Yellow heat-health alerts have been issued for other regions, while an amber alert is in place for areas expecting significant impacts from the high temperatures. The hot spell is expected to be short-lived, with temperatures cooling down towards the end of the week in some parts of the country. Showers and possible thunderstorms are also forecast for northern areas during the week.
