UK Braces for Record Low Morning Temperatures

Date:

Weather models are indicating a potential drop in morning temperatures to single digits across the entirety of the UK, with some regions possibly reaching as low as 1 degree Celsius. Despite predictions from weather forecasters at the Met Office and MeteoGroup, who supply data to BBC Weather, suggesting an increased likelihood of heatwaves this summer following a record-breaking hot spell in May.

Although warm weather is expected to return shortly, the ECMWF weather model is hinting at a forthcoming cold spell starting next week, commencing on Tuesday. The forecast maps show that all 92 counties of the UK may experience temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius around 6 a.m.

Tuesday is poised to be particularly cold, especially in northern Scotland where temperatures could hit 4 degrees Celsius in the morning. Even in the typically warmer south-east of England, temperatures might struggle to surpass 8-9 degrees Celsius.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, the ECMWF model projects similarly chilly conditions, with temperatures potentially dropping to 2 degrees Celsius in Scotland. Northern Ireland, northern England, central England, and Wales could experience temperatures ranging from 6-8 degrees Celsius. However, the south-east of England might see minimum temperatures just reaching double digits at 10 degrees Celsius on Wednesday morning.

By Thursday morning, northern Scotland could see highs of only 1 degree Celsius. There are signs of slight improvements in southern England on Thursday, especially in the south-west, where minimum temperatures at 6 a.m. are anticipated to reach 10-11 degrees Celsius.

Temperature anomaly maps for next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday reveal a national trend of temperatures falling well below the seasonal averages.

The Met Office’s forecast for the upcoming week paints a bleak picture, with expectations of breezy conditions and below-average temperatures, potentially accompanied by extended periods of rain.

The Met Office’s forecast spanning June 9 to 19 suggests a changeable start to the period with Atlantic frontal systems moving across the UK, bringing showers or longer spells of rain, particularly in the northwest. Winds may be strong in some areas, especially in the northwest. Towards the latter part of the period, higher pressure and more settled conditions may prevail, especially in the south, although intermittent wet periods are still likely. Overall, temperatures are anticipated to be close to or slightly above the normal range.
