UK Braces for Third Heatwave: 35C Forecasted

Date:

The United Kingdom is currently experiencing its third heatwave in the past three months, with temperatures projected to surpass 35C in some areas later this week. The heatwave criteria have been officially met in southeast England after temperatures soared above 28C for three consecutive days, as reported by the Met Office on Monday.

Forecasts indicate that temperatures will continue to climb across the UK in the coming days, with several regions likely to hit their local heatwave thresholds. Southern England is expected to see temperature highs around 32C on Tuesday, escalating to 33C on Wednesday and 34C on Thursday, with isolated areas reaching 35C by Friday and Saturday.

On Monday, the highest temperature recorded was 34C in Teddington, southwest London, according to the Met Office. While southern regions brace for intense heat from Monday evening onward, a north-south divide is anticipated during the first half of the week.

Scotland is expected to experience stronger winds and rain on Tuesday, with temperatures remaining close to the seasonal average. However, as the weekend approaches, warm air is predicted to reach northern parts of the UK, leading to increased humidity and a heightened risk of showers or isolated thunderstorms.

The Met Office forecasts a slight decrease in temperatures early next week, although most areas will remain warm and dry. Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates advised the public to take necessary precautions against the heat and sun exposure.

Despite the onset of heatwave conditions in some parts of the UK, this current heatwave is not expected to break previous records set in May and June. While temperatures are not likely to reach the extreme highs observed last month, southern England may face several days with temperatures in the low 30s, with some areas reaching 34-35C by the end of the week.

Health alerts have been issued for the Midlands and southern England by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) from Wednesday morning until Sunday night, highlighting potential health and social care service disruptions due to high temperatures, particularly affecting older individuals and those with underlying health issues.

Similar alerts have been issued for Yorkshire and northern England, with warnings of possible water-related incidents, including cold water shock and drowning risks. England could also experience “tropical nights” later in the week, with temperatures not dropping below 20C.

National Rail Enquiries advises passengers to stay updated on travel information due to the heatwave, while vehicle breakdown rescue services anticipate increased demand during the high temperatures. Drivers are encouraged to carry ample water and perform essential vehicle checks before embarking on journeys, focusing on tire pressures, coolant levels, and oil levels.

Tony Rich from the AA emphasized the importance of heat safety for drivers, recommending regular breaks, proper vehicle maintenance, and hydration. The Met Office highlighted high UV levels and advised the public to use sun protection, also warning of elevated pollen levels in some areas this week.
