The UK’s commandos are in line for a £500 million increase as part of adjustments to the long-awaited defense investment plan. High-speed vessels and strike drones will be allocated to the elite force, with a specific focus on the High North region, including the Arctic Circle, in response to heightened Russian activities in the area.
Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis has reportedly secured an additional £1 billion for the defense investment plan, in addition to the £13.5 billion previously offered that led to his predecessor John Healey’s resignation in protest. The plan, which was delayed from the previous year, faced delays due to disagreements within the government over the necessary military budget.
Jarvis has been redirecting the investment focus towards providing equipment to frontline troops since assuming office as Defence Secretary. The funding is intended to support new high-speed commando insertion craft and innovative technologies, including unmanned vessels, advanced communications systems, and strike drones.
Jarvis stated that significant progress has been achieved recently, with ongoing efforts to finalize the plan before July 7. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the right allocation of resources and capabilities to frontline forces to enhance their operational effectiveness in an increasingly volatile global environment.
