A potential ban on social media for individuals under 16 is on the horizon, with the Technology Secretary emphasizing the necessity of taking significant actions to safeguard young users online. While the final decision is pending, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall hinted at the likelihood of blocking access to popular apps like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram for individuals under 16.
In response to the Government’s online safety consultation, where nine out of 10 parents advocated for age restrictions similar to those in Australia, Kendall acknowledged the strong demand for implementing a ban. She highlighted parents’ concerns about the negative impacts of excessive social media use, such as late-night phone usage and exposure to harmful content.
With over 100,000 responses to the consultation, including input from 40,000 parents, the Government is set to make a conclusive decision in the coming weeks. Kendall affirmed that while a ban is under consideration, further measures like enhanced age verification methods are being explored to support parental efforts in ensuring online safety for children.
Drawing inspiration from Australia’s lead in banning social media for under-16s, Kendall emphasized the importance of preparing young individuals for the online landscape. She emphasized the need for adults, parents, and the government to collaborate in protecting and educating young users about navigating the digital world responsibly.
In addition to contemplating age restrictions, the consultation also delved into issues like AI chatbots, stranger interactions, live game streaming, and curfews for online activities. Kendall underscored the need for a comprehensive approach to address these concerns in conjunction with enforcing age limits.
While some critics express reservations about the potential ban, advocating for stricter enforcement of existing regulations on tech platforms, Kendall reaffirmed the accountability of social media companies in upholding legal standards. She dismissed claims of political passivity towards tech giants and highlighted her stance on confronting tech companies over compliance issues.
Despite the complexities, Kendall recognized the benefits of technologies like AI, citing examples of its positive impact on healthcare. She stressed the importance of ensuring technology’s safety and fostering trust among users to leverage its full potential for societal advancement.
