“UK Defense Secretary Suspects Putin’s Aid to Iran in Conflict”

Date:

Vladimir Putin is suspected of aiding Iran in its conflict against the United States and Israel, according to the UK defense secretary. John Healey, the UK defense secretary, suggested that the recent actions by Iranian forces targeting a base in Iraq where British troops were stationed showed similarities to Russian military tactics seen in Ukraine. This resemblance was particularly evident in Iran’s use of drones.

Iran had previously sold “Shahed” attack drones to Russia, which then developed its own version of the drone and reportedly provided assistance to Iran in response to attacks from the US and Israel. Healey mentioned during a visit to the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters that there could be a connection between Russia and Iran, noting that Putin could be benefiting from the high oil prices resulting from the conflict.

The global oil prices surged after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane. Despite a significant naval presence off the coast of Iran, US President Donald Trump has struggled to resolve the situation.

Lieutenant General Nick Perry, the chief of joint operations overseeing UK military activities worldwide, affirmed the link between Russia and Iran. He pointed out that Iranian drone tactics, influenced by Russian methods, had become more effective in recent operations. Drones, particularly Iranian-linked ones, were identified as causing significant damage in the Middle East, including an attack on a Royal Air Force base in Cyprus.

A drone attack on the RAF Akrotiri base on March 2 was attributed to Iran, with Secretary Healey condemning it as a dangerous and indiscriminate act. The drone used was identified as a Shahed model, capable of individual-target attacks but unlikely to cause extensive damage to structures. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the drone contained any Russian components.

Healey confirmed that while there were reports of US casualties, there were no reported British casualties. The UK is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as new information emerges.
