TUI has decided to cancel additional flights to Cyprus while a British Royal Navy warship is en route to the area.
According to Sir Keir Starmer, the UK is deploying HMS Dragon, a Type 45 Destroyer, to the Mediterranean region. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also informed Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides about the UK’s plans to send helicopters equipped with counter-drone capabilities.
The decision to deploy the warship and helicopters follows a recent incident where a drone struck the runway at RAF Akrotiri, the British air base in Cyprus. The Ministry of Defence reported that the drone caused only minimal damage.
Several airlines, including easyJet, Ryanair, and TUI, have had to cancel flights to Cyprus’s commercial airports on Tuesday. TUI specifically announced the cancellation of four TUI Airways flights scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, due to the evolving situation in the Middle East.
