UK Faces Medicine Shortage Risk Amid US-Iran Conflict

Date:

The United Kingdom is facing a potential shortage of medicines in the near future due to the conflict between the US/Israeli alliance and Iran, experts have cautioned. Essential medications, including painkillers and cancer drugs, may be impacted by the ongoing war, leading to a decrease in supply and potential price hikes. Iran’s control over the vital shipping lane, the Strait of Hormuz, has forced some countries to airlift crucial medications to other parts of the world.

However, drone strikes on Gulf airports have disrupted airspace in the Middle East, adding further complications to the situation. Mark Samuels, the CEO of Medicines UK, which represents drug manufacturers for the NHS, emphasized that while the UK is not currently in a crisis, the situation is still grave.

Samuels warned that continued conflict could result in drug shortages within weeks in the UK. Despite half of the UK’s drugs being domestically produced, a significant portion is manufactured in India and Europe, with increased shipping costs due to the conflict. The CEO highlighted the challenges faced by manufacturers in absorbing rising transportation costs, potentially making certain medicines unprofitable to supply to the NHS.

In response to the escalating situation, pharmacists have urged the UK to consider stockpiling medicines. The Independent Pharmacies Association, representing 5,000 pharmacies in England and Wales, has raised concerns about shortages of painkillers like co-codamol and opioids. Dr. Leyla Hannbeck, the association’s chief executive, noted the strain on global supply chains and the implications of disruptions in critical shipping routes on medicine availability.

Furthermore, suppliers to UK hospitals are required to maintain eight weeks’ worth of medication, while medical distributors typically hold six to eight weeks’ worth of drugs and treatments. The health sector is closely monitoring the situation to ensure a stable supply of essential medications amidst the ongoing geopolitical tensions.
