UK Faces Record Heatwave: Third Month with 35C+ Temps

Date:

The Met Office reported that 2026 has marked a milestone by recording temperatures of 35C or higher on six different days, the first time in history. Consequently, the UK is preparing for its third heatwave in as many months, with temperatures hitting 35.2C at Coton in the Elms, Derbyshire today, surpassing the previous records set in 1976 and 2020 with five days exceeding 35C.

This year has seen temperatures reach 35C or above in three different calendar months, breaking the record for the most occurrences of temperatures at 34C or higher, totaling nine times this summer. Affinity Water has declared a hosepipe ban, affecting millions in South East England due to the strain on water resources caused by high temperatures and low rainfall, leading to unprecedented water consumption levels.

The ban prohibits the use of hosepipes for activities like watering gardens, washing cars, and cleaning patios, among others. Affinity Water emphasized the importance of conserving water to protect supplies for customers, especially the vulnerable, communities, and the environment. Similar water restrictions have been imposed in the east of England, Cambridge, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, and parts of Kent.

The UK has experienced a new temperature record with the eighth day this year hitting 34C or higher, surpassing previous highs set in 1976 and 2020. The strain on water supplies has intensified following a record warm spring, with concerns of drought in certain regions. The impact of climate change, population growth, and outdated water infrastructure have added pressure to the system, leading to water scarcity issues.

Hosepipe bans have been implemented for Southern Water customers across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, as well as for Anglian Water customers in the east of England. Other water companies are urging customers to limit water usage to cope with the heatwave. The Metropolitan Police has advised against unnecessary calls due to increased emergency calls, coinciding with high temperatures during the FIFA World Cup weekend.
