“UK Braces for Snow & Cold Snap, Blizzard Alert Thursday”

Date:

The United Kingdom has been hit by snow and frigid temperatures over the weekend, and the inclement conditions are expected to persist with a new weather system moving in shortly.

Numerous weather alerts have been issued across the UK since Friday, and while Monday may bring some relief, the wintry weather is set to return. A fresh weather front is anticipated to bring more unsettled conditions to the country on Wednesday, February 18, with snowfall expected in the evening.

According to the ECMWF weather model, areas likely to be affected first on Wednesday include Northern Ireland, Wales, and western regions of England. The snowfall could extend into Thursday, with up to nine inches expected to accumulate in the Scottish Highlands and spread across much of central and northern England.

The approaching cold front is forecasted to trigger a blizzard along the west coast of Scotland and northern England starting around 6pm on Thursday, spanning from Glasgow to Carlisle.

Prior to the arrival of this freezing weather, the early part of the week is expected to be characterized by unsettled and blustery conditions with showers across the entire country, gradually easing by Tuesday.

This development comes on the heels of 74 flood warnings and 162 flood alerts in place across England on Sunday morning. Jonathan Day from the Environment Agency stated that while over 24,000 properties have been safeguarded, approximately 330 have been affected by flooding.

A snow warning is currently in effect for parts of eastern England until 4pm today, cautioning that snowfall may disrupt travel. It mentions the likelihood of rain transitioning into sleet and snow, with potential slushy accumulations ranging from 1cm to 4cm in certain areas.

Looking ahead, the Met Office’s long-range forecast spanning from Friday, February 20, to Sunday, March 1, suggests continued unsettled weather with showers, rain, and occasional strong winds, along with possible snowfall, especially in northern highland areas. Temperature variations are expected across different regions, with intermittent drier spells becoming more frequent and extended over time.
