A UK family’s summer holiday plans to travel to Portugal were disrupted when they were denied boarding at Liverpool John Lennon Airport due to a passport issue. Dan Sharples, 41, and his wife Laura Sharples, along with their two sons, were all set to depart on June 23 but were stopped at the gate. The couple, from Widnes, had arranged the trip earlier in the year through a local travel agency.
The setback occurred when their nine-year-old son, Spencer, was informed that his passport, although not expired, was too close to the expiration date, rendering it invalid. The family, who intended to join a group vacation in Portugal, including 24 members from Dan’s former rugby club, expressed dismay over the situation. Dan mentioned that the travel agent had possession of their passports during the trip planning and no issues were raised until the boarding gate.
Due to post-Brexit changes, British passport holders now fall under the category of “third-country nationals” when traveling to EU countries, necessitating passports to remain valid for at least three months beyond the planned return date. Hays Travel, the agency involved, recommends customers to stay updated on travel document requirements through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office website.
Dan expressed frustration over the missed holiday opportunity, emphasizing that if the passport problem had been flagged earlier, they could have resolved it in time. Despite contacting Hays Travel, the family did not receive a refund, leading to disappointment and a sense of being let down by the service provider.
While acknowledging the responsibility of travelers to ensure the validity of their documents, Hays Travel maintained that customers are advised to stay informed through official channels to avoid such incidents. Despite the efforts to address the issue, the family was left without a holiday or any compensation, leaving them dissatisfied with the outcome.
