“UK Government Cracks Down on Questionable Donations”

Date:

Political parties and politicians may face fines or even imprisonment for accepting donations from questionable companies, as per the recent government announcement. New regulations will limit company donations based on their profits to combat unfair financial interference in British politics.

The Representation of the People Bill had initially imposed restrictions using a revenue test. However, following the Rycroft review on foreign financial interference in UK democracy, the government is now moving toward using a company’s profit as the basis for restrictions.

The review by former permanent secretary Philip Rycroft recommended a halt on cryptocurrency donations and a cap on donations from British voters abroad. It argued that restricting donations by profit would be more effective in preventing foreign interference.

Under the new rules, companies must demonstrate sufficient profit to cover their donations and will face limits on the frequency of their contributions over a specific period. Failure by a political party to verify compliance with the new regulations could result in fines of up to £20,000 by the Electoral Commission and potential prison sentences of up to seven years for serious offenses.

An MHCLG spokesperson emphasized the importance of safeguarding democracy from external threats and hostile entities. The restrictions on company donations aim to ensure that only legitimate UK companies contributing positively to society can make donations, preventing illegitimate funds from entering the democratic process.

Recent reports revealed that a significant portion of Reform’s donations came from entities with offshore connections, accounting for nearly 80% of the total funds received by the party last year. In comparison, Labour raised £4 million, the Conservatives received £4.2 million, the Green Party got £263,884, and the Liberal Democrats were granted £3,019,235 in donations during the same period.
