A senior government official has moved to allay concerns over potential fuel shortages in the UK due to disruptions in the Middle East.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson advised drivers to remain calm and carry on ahead of the upcoming Easter bank holiday weekend. Speaking to the BBC, she emphasized the continued production and maintenance of fuel supplies.
Phillipson highlighted endorsements from trade industry bodies, as well as organizations like the AA and the RAC, to reassure the public that there is no immediate need for alarm.
The reassurance comes in response to suggestions from Nick Butler, a former BP executive and advisor to Gordon Brown, who proposed potential restrictions to manage fuel supplies effectively. Butler stressed the importance of safeguarding critical sectors of the economy and implementing strategic market management.
He also pointed out that various countries worldwide are exploring methods to reduce fuel consumption gently, such as alternate driving days based on registration numbers and additional weekly holidays, as seen in some Far East nations.
A spokesperson for DESNZ affirmed that petrol stations are adequately stocked with a diverse and resilient fuel supply.
Regarding the planned fuel duty increase in September, Phillipson indicated that the government is closely monitoring the situation and considering the necessary measures. She assured that no immediate action is required, as the current freeze on fuel duty remains in effect.
The Chancellor is committed to prioritizing the well-being of British citizens amidst the ongoing conflict, with ongoing assessments of the situation and potential future actions.
Phillipson expressed hope for a de-escalation of the conflict before any decisions need to be made closer to the planned fuel duty adjustment date.
