The Met Office has forecasted possible rain and thunderstorms that may disrupt the UK’s third heatwave of 2026, with temperatures soaring to highs of 32C in certain areas. Much of England and Wales are expected to experience sweltering conditions in the upcoming days, with temperatures ranging from 30C to 32C as the heatwave persists.
Although there is a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms in parts of southern England this week, many regions are likely to enjoy abundant sunshine, as stated by the Met Office. Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates mentioned that the weather pattern will remain settled, with significant sunshine and temperatures peaking around 30C-32C in England and Wales.
In contrast, eastern coastlines might not experience as much heat due to cloud cover and cooling onshore breezes, keeping temperatures lower than inland areas. Looking ahead to the weekend, high pressure is expected to return from the northwest, displacing the risk of showers and reinstating dry and warm conditions.
While temperatures may slightly decrease from midweek peaks, the majority of the UK is anticipated to have pleasant and warm weather extending into Saturday. The Met Office has also cautioned about an elevated risk of wildfires in parts of England and Wales due to the prolonged hot and dry weather. Stronger breezes in certain southern areas could pose dangers for water activities.
The National Fire Chiefs Council spokesperson emphasized the rapid spread of wildfires in hot and dry conditions, urging caution to prevent potential disasters. Paddle UK’s Head of Safety, Lee Pooley, highlighted the risks of offshore winds carrying water users away from shore, advising people to check forecasts before engaging in water activities this week.
