Trump has set a deadline for Tehran to cease its blockade of the vital Strait of Hormuz or face severe military actions that could regress Iran to ancient times.
The UK government indicated that it might reject requests to use UK military bases for offensive strikes on civilian infrastructure, emphasizing that the Prime Minister had only agreed to assist American bombers in cases of collective self-defense. Previously, Keir Starmer approved the US use of RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia for defensive strikes on Iranian missile sites, with all US requests evaluated individually.
There have been no formal requests from the US concerning strikes on Iranian power plants and bridges. The Prime Minister’s spokesman emphasized that the UK’s position on utilizing bases for collective self-defense remains unchanged and is guided by legal advice. Cabinet minister Wes Streeting praised Starmer’s decision to keep Britain out of the conflict with Iran.
Regarding potential US actions against Iran’s civilian infrastructure, the Health Secretary declined to label them as war crimes, reiterating the UK’s stance of non-involvement in the conflict. Streeting commended the Prime Minister’s prudent approach and criticized the differing positions of political figures like Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage.
Over 30 countries’ military planners convened to discuss strategies for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway currently blockaded by Iran. The UK has authorized the US to use British bases for defensive operations aimed at neutralizing threats posed by Iranian missile capabilities to British citizens and regional partners.
While Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz persists, efforts are underway to secure the passage for international shipping once hostilities cease. Trump reiterated his willingness to target Iran’s civilian infrastructure, dismissing claims of potential war crimes.
