“UK Nuclear Veterans’ Fight for Justice Escalates”

Date:

For four decades, this publication has been a staunch advocate for nuclear veterans, even when their plight was forgotten by others. The recent release of a review during a high-profile event like the World Cup semi-final serves as validation of the veterans’ accounts, prompting calls for accountability.

In 2018, Parliament was informed that the Ministry of Defence claimed it had no records of blood testing on troops during nuclear weapon tests. However, after pressure, the Ministry has now reluctantly disclosed 315 pages of previously concealed information, citing state secrecy.

Additionally, there are approximately 50,000 undisclosed files held by the MoD that remain unsearched, potentially affecting 5,339 veterans who were intentionally excluded from health studies. Shockingly, medical records were unlawfully destroyed until September of the previous year while authorities denied the existence of a blood testing program.

Serious criminal allegations are now being investigated by Thames Valley Police due to this cover-up, which has had devastating consequences on numerous service families, impacting their lives, health, and mental well-being.

Since 1983, when Paul Foot first highlighted the “Curse of Christmas Island,” ongoing denial and deception by the British government regarding the experiences of troops at Montebello, Emu Field, Maralinga, and Christmas Island, as well as the local indigenous population, have persisted.

Notably, historical figures like Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden, and Margaret Thatcher downplayed the severity of the nuclear testing incidents, misrepresenting the facts. Despite continuous efforts to expose the truth, including uncovering human experiments and genetic research supporting the veterans’ claims, the MoD persistently provided denials to the media.

The tireless advocacy for veterans’ rights culminated in a recent pledge by incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham to initiate a special tribunal to address the cover-up and pursue justice. Despite enduring immense challenges and losses, the veterans have exhibited remarkable bravery, contrasting with the MoD’s perceived lack of accountability and transparency.

Ultimately, the veterans’ valor contrasts sharply with the government’s perceived negligence and exploitation of their sacrifices, underscoring the urgent need for truth and justice in this long-standing issue.
