“UK O2 Customers Targeted in Sophisticated SIM Card Scam”

Date:

An urgent warning has been issued to iPhone and Android users by O2, alerting them to a new scam targeting UK customers. The fraudulent message being sent to devices claims that customers’ SIM cards are at risk of deactivation due to a failure to accept updated Terms and Conditions. The scam is sophisticated, using urgent language and appearing to originate from an official O2 number, making it harder to detect as fake.

For those with O2 SIM cards, it is crucial to be vigilant. The message states, “O2UK: IMPORTANT: Your SIM Card(s) will be inactive on 04/06/2026, because you have NOT signed our Terms and Conditions. Logon to sign.” Additionally, the message contains a link leading to a fake website aimed at stealing personal information, potentially enabling scammers to access accounts and compromise passwords.

Customers who receive such messages should avoid clicking on any links and instead access their accounts through the official O2 platforms or contact the network directly to verify the message’s authenticity. Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the increasing sophistication of scammers, urging the public to report suspicious messages to help combat scams effectively.

O2 has provided guidance to help customers protect themselves:

– O2 does not send texts requesting acceptance of new Terms and Conditions or threatening SIM deactivation.
– Beware of messages using urgent or threatening language to pressure quick actions.
– Exercise caution with messages from unknown numbers; genuine O2 messages typically come from a verified “O2” sender.
– Avoid clicking on links in unexpected texts; verify requests through official channels.
– If you have entered login details after clicking a suspicious link, change your password immediately to secure your account.
