UK on Amber Alert: Hottest May Day Threatens Records

Date:

An amber health alert has been extended for various regions in the UK as temperatures are expected to reach 35C, potentially marking the hottest May day on record.

The elevated alert signifies an increased risk of fatalities, especially among individuals aged 65 and above or those with underlying health conditions, as stated by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The soaring temperatures are also likely to have a significant impact on healthcare and social services.

The recent record-breaking heatwave in the UK saw Kew Gardens in southwest London reach a scorching 34.8C, setting a new spring temperature record. The UKHSA has now extended the amber alerts for the South West, South East, London, East and West Midlands, and the East of England until 5pm on Thursday, May 28, along with yellow alerts for the North West and North East.

Previously set to expire on Wednesday, May 27, the alerts have been prolonged, with the yellow alert for the South West being upgraded to amber.

The extreme heat poses a danger to vulnerable groups, such as older adults, whose bodies struggle to regulate temperature. Age UK recommends staying indoors during peak heat hours between 11am and 3pm, and taking regular cold baths or showers.

Today could potentially witness the hottest May temperature on record, with highs of 35C forecasted across large areas of southern England and Wales, possibly reaching 36C, according to the Met Office.

Concurrently, thunderstorm warnings have been issued for parts of the South West, West Midlands, East Midlands, and East of England between 3pm and 10pm on Tuesday. The Met Office predicts lightning, hail, gusty winds, and up to 30mm of rain in less than an hour, which may offer some relief from the heat.

Yesterday, the UK experienced a “tropical night” as the warmest minimum May temperature record was broken for the second consecutive day. Temperatures remained above 20C overnight in certain UK regions, with Kenley Airfield in south London recording 21.3C.

Met Office chief forecaster Andy Page anticipates the continuation of the exceptional late-spring heat throughout the week, with more “tropical nights” expected.

“Last night potentially broke the record for the warmest May night, and we anticipate further very warm nights in the south in the upcoming days,” Page mentioned. “There is a possibility of experiencing a ‘tropical night’ in parts of southern England and Wales tonight, where temperatures stay above 20C.”
