The United Kingdom has pledged over £500 million in new defense missiles and systems to support Ukraine in countering Vladimir Putin’s aggressive attacks on energy facilities and civilians.
Defense Secretary John Healey has revealed that the UK will also allocate £150 million for the first time to Nato’s prioritized Ukraine requirements list (Purl), aimed at swiftly providing air defense missiles to Ukraine. Additionally, a £390 million agreement will see the delivery of 1,000 lightweight multirole missiles to Ukraine, produced in Belfast.
In a statement, Mr. Healey emphasized the UK’s unwavering commitment to assisting Ukraine in the face of Putin’s ongoing aggression, particularly in the form of relentless drone and missile assaults. He highlighted the significance of the new half-billion-pound air defense package, including funding for Purl, to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
The announcement coincides with Mr. Healey’s participation in meetings in Brussels alongside the 50-nation Ukraine Defence Contact Group and Nato defense ministers to strategize on countering the Russian invasion.
Under the Purl initiative, Nato member countries collaborate to procure defense equipment from the United States for Ukraine, strengthening the collective defense efforts.
Mr. Healey’s condemnation of the recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians as “brutal” and “cynical” during his visit to Kyiv underscores the urgency of supporting Ukraine in securing peace amid escalating hostilities. He criticized Putin for targeting civilians and cities with deadly drone and missile strikes, emphasizing the imperative to assist Ukraine in achieving stability.
The Defense Secretary’s strong stance against Russian aggression aligns with the UK’s commitment to international security within the NATO framework. The joint efforts with Nato and allies reflect a shared dedication to defending Ukraine against external threats and promoting peace in the region.
